The Rolo Way

The project

I designed and developed The Rolo Way, my independent journal exploring history, science, and culture. The project combines a distinctive reading experience with my proprietary editorial platform: a private system that helps writers develop clearer, more engaging articles while preserving their individual voice.

The frontend

The frontend

The homepage invites readers into a story through full-screen imagery, a strong headline, and a short introduction. Dark backgrounds and restrained metallic accents give the journal its identity. I carried this visual language into article openings, giving each subject room to establish its own mood.

Longer essays move to a warm, light reading surface with serif body text and generous spacing. A contents sidebar and reading-progress indicator help readers navigate detailed articles. Illustrated archives and thematic collections offer routes into related writing, balancing the cinematic openings with comfortable reading and discovery.

Essay archive introduction with year navigation on a starry background.
The 2025 archive with illustrated history, religion, and astronomy article cards.
Moon illustration beside the journal’s email signup form against a starry background.
The 2023 archive grid featuring cultural history, auroras, artillery, a black hole, and ancient Egypt.
Expanded navigation with routes to the journal’s content formats.
History article opening about Shajarat al-Durr with a gold and red portrait.

My editorial platform

My editorial platform

My private editorial platform supports the work behind the writing: structure, pacing, language, and thematic development. It is designed to help writers make an article clearer and more engaging without losing what makes their voice distinctive. The writer remains in control of the final piece.

The ambition is to give the editing process greater depth and range while preserving each writer’s individuality. Together, the journal and the editorial platform reflect my approach to this project: thoughtful tools for developing the writing, and a carefully designed frontend for experiencing it.
